This tutorial demonstrates creating and implementing simple
patterns in Photoshop version 6. These patterns can then be used to give
your picture a more unique look. We will create a hatching look in this
tutorial.
1. Create a new 20x20 canvas in photoshop making sure that
"transparent" is checked in the contents section.
2. The image would be too small to work with so press <CTRL>
and the + key to enlarge the canvas. Enlarge it to a suitable working size.
i prefer to enlarge it to about 800%.
3. To keep it simple we will create a black hatching effect.
we may of course choose to incorperate other colours and other patterns
later when desired.
4. In the tools palette select the line tool
5. Now holding the <SHIFT> button drag the mouse from one corner
of the canvas to it's diagonal opposite. Repeat this for the remaining corners
to give it a cross look.
6. Press <CTRL> - A to select all the contents of the
canvas.
7. In the file menu select EDIT >> DEFINE PATTERN...
A prompt should appear to label or name the pattern we will do so appropriately.
Click OK.
8. To implement the pattern, firstly open a desired picture.
Make sure that the it is set in RGB format.
(Check to see if the following is ticked, IMAGE >> MODE >>
RGB COLOR)
9. Double click the layer that the image is in, and if it is not named
then name the layer. Double click it again, select and highlight the PATTERN
OVERLAY option in the left hand option pane.
10. Click on PATTERN In the right hand option pane and you should see
that the pattern created has already been inserted as a pattern option.
Adjust the OPACITY and and SCALE, add a blue background to get the desired
effect.
Here are a few examples of other patterns that i have created.
Lined pattern Overlay
Checkered Pattern Overlay 1 with a Gradient Overlay
Checkered Pattern Overlay 1 with a Gradient Overlay
A wavey effect could be added
Diagonal Spots with a different Gradient Overlay would give a good look
Diagonal lines
The list goes on
Not only can these patterns be implemented to backgrounds
but they could be set into pictures, fonts and borders.
