Sphere Effect
Skill level: Basic
Programs used: Photoshop 6

Here is an interesting design you can use to add extra detail to a 3 dimensional object.
1. Create a new canvas 200x200 pixels, fill the background in with black. Make a new layer and with the Ellipse Tool draw a perfect circle by honding down the SHIFT key while dragging.
2. Select this existing layer by holding down the CTR key while clicking on that layer.
3. Select FILTER >NOISE >ADD NOISE and set the AMOUNT to 110% with GAUSSIAN and MOMOCHROMATIC selected.
4. Select FILTER >BRUSH STROKES >ACCENTED EDGES and set the EDGE WIDTH to 2, EDGE BRIGHTNESS to 26 and the Smoothness to 15.
5. Next, make a selection of this layer using the same method as described in step 2. Double click on this layer to get into the LAYER PROPERTIES. Select COLOR OVERLAY and select a shade of green. The green i used had the number "339900". Go to the BLEND MODE and change it from NORMAL to EXCLUSION.
5. Next, create a new layer and make a selection of the previous layer using the same method as described in step 2. Fill this selection in with yellow and change the BLEND MODE to DARKEN. Go into the layer properties and select a RED COLOR OVERLAY and change that blending mode to COLOR DODGE.
6. Next use the ELLIPTIC MARQUEE Tool and make a selection as shown below.
7. Go to SELECT >FEATHER and set the pixels to 10. Fill the selection in with a light yellow.
8. Create a new layer and make a selection as shown below.

9. Fill the selected region in with black and move the selection down and to the right by 10 pixels and delete.

10. Next select BLUR >GAUSSIAN BLUR and set the RADIUS to 5 pixels.
There you have it. With a bit of extra detail and experimentation you can come up with a design like this. All that was added was a few more layers of shadowing and a higher contrast of the orange sphere.
